The word “quantum” is one that most people are familiar with, perhaps from movies or TV shows, especially science fiction movies. Even if we don’t know what it really means, we’ve probably heard it. This quantum technology and the internet sound like something out of the movies. In physics, a quantum is the minimum amount of any physical entity involved in an interaction. It’s the smallest state of matter.
The idea behind the quantum internet isn’t to replace the internet we know today but to create a new network that is much faster and can solve specific problems such as analysing financial risk, encrypting data, and examining the properties of materials.
“The quantum internet represents a paradigm shift in how we think about secure global communication,” – David Awschalom, Liew Family Professor of Molecular Engineering and Physics at the University of Chicago.
Companies
So, what kind of developments is the world making in this technology? IBM, one of America’s largest technology companies, is the leader in this field and releases new developments to people every year. Famous companies such as Google and Microsoft are also doing a lot of research in this field. Because the hypothesis says this internet will be very fast. These tech giants are racing to make this technology a reality due to its potential to revolutionise communication and computing.

Global Efforts
Even though these companies are American companies, many countries around the world attach importance to this issue. As you’d expect, Germany and Japan are the other big players in this field, with China not far behind. Russia got in on the act in 2022.
A notable milestone was in 2017, when researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China successfully sent entangled photons between an orbiting satellite and ground stations more than 700 miles below. Although, the system only recovered one in every 6 million photons, it was a significant step forward, which was too few for reliable communication. This might come back to you as a small and failed experiment, but it was actually a huge development in this field.
Researchers from different countries have made progress over the years, and the most recent research recorded was that with three research teams based in the United States, China and the Netherlands was able to connect parts of a network using photons in the optical-fibre-friendly infrared part of the spectrum.
Turkiye’s Position
What about Turkiye? Although Aselsan in Turkiye has produced quantum computers, there hasn’t been much development in the field of quantum internet. It’s mostly researched by private companies, and some progress will be made over time.
The quantum internet, once just a pipe dream, is now becoming a reality. Companies all over the world, like IBM and Google , are driving its development. We can see progress everywhere, with Turkey focusing on quantum computing. The future looks like it’s going to bring some pretty transformative communication and computing technologies.
