We all do it; it’s become a reflex. But when we click “I accept all cookies,” what exactly are we accepting? After accepting cookies on a shopping website, you’ll likely start seeing ads related to that site or its products on your phone or any other device where your account is open. The reason behind this is cookies. 🍪
When you accept all cookies, marketers and other third parties will access your information. Allowing only “necessary cookies” lets the website function properly.

Is it Really a Cookie? 🍪
Sadly, it’s not that simple. In 1994, Lou Montulli of Netscape Communications came up with the idea of using cookies to simplify online transactions for users. The term “cookie” originally came from “magic cookie,” which refers to a data packet that maintains its integrity even after being sent and received multiple times.

Type of cookies 🥠
- Session cookies, also known as transient or per-session cookies, store information while the user is on the website and are removed when the user ends the session. 🔄
- Persistent cookies stay on your device for a set period of time. They remain until they expire or you remove them. Since persistent cookies collect user data, such as browsing preferences and behaviors, people sometimes call them tracking cookies. 📊
- First-party cookies are those set by the website you’re visiting. They often save things like your location or your preferred settings. 🌐
- Third-party cookies appear on a page you visit when it contains third-party content, such as ads, scripts, web banners, and embedded videos. Advertisers often use third-party cookies to track your online activities. 👀
- Super-cookies and session cookies are similar in tracking user activity and browser history. However, even after you delete regular cookies, super-cookies can still recreate user profiles. Additionally, super-cookies are stored in different locations than regular cookies. 🦹
- Flash cookies save user data in Flash apps, just like browser cookies. Websites sometimes use flash cookies as a “backup” if the browser cookie gets removed. 📸
Most of the time accepting them is safe, they make your internet more personalised.
How To Find Cookies 🔎
On chrome you can find out what type of cookies a website is using, Right-click on the website and click Inspect.
- It will open the developer console of Chrome.
- Select the tab Applications.
- Expand the Cookies in the drop-down menu on the left, click on the cookie twice.
You will see all the cookies that the website uses on the right.

It’s up to you whether you accept or decline cookies. Some websites won’t let you use them if you don’t accept them, but if you know the website, there’s no downside to accepting them.
Do you think accepting cookies has bad sides?
